Everywhere that you turn you see a new rule that someone has come up with for weight loss. You have to do this, or eat that, or perform a certain exercise. But do you really need to do all of those things to lose weight? Many of the things that people think of as rules when it comes to losing weight are actually detrimental to your weight loss efforts. Sometimes, in order to get things done, you need to break some of the rules. You should break these eight rules if you really want to lose those extra pounds.
1. Fat fills you up so you eat less. If you are really looking for a single food that will fill you up fast and keep you full longer you should try protein. Protein is a thermogenic food, meaning that it takes a lot of energy for your body to digest and it will speed up your metabolism.
2. One bad day ruins your whole diet. No it doesn’t it. Everyone that goes on a diet in the hopes of losing weight is going to have a bad day occasionally. Don’t let it get you down. Just get back on your diet as quickly as you can. Success depends on the total effort, not what happens on a single day.
3. Skipping meals is a good way to cut calories. This one isn’t only wrong, it is dangerous. Never skip a meal. It will slow your metabolism down and seriously hurt your efforts.
4. Don’t eat at night. Why do people still believe that your body knows the difference between calories consumed at noon and those consumed at midnight? It doesn’t. Only the total calories matter. Eat when you are hungry to avoid the binging that hunger pains will cause.
5. Always eat at the same time. Why? This rule is similar to don’t eat at night and it is just as misguided. Again, eat when you are hungry. Making yourself wait will only cause more problems by slowing down your metabolism and lead to binging.
6. Diet with a buddy. This is a good idea when you consider its intention. Mutual support and the feeling of not wanting to let your friend down are both good concepts. The problem arises when your buddy gives up on his diet. Those same concepts can now lead you to quit also.
7. Refusing food is rude. How can doing something that is in the best interest of your health be rude? Tell them that while it looks really good you are on a diet and need to stick to it for your health and well being. People will understand.
8. Carbs are fattening. Well, sort of, if you think of carbs as sugar and white flour. The carbs you should be consuming are complex carbs like whole grains. Complex carbs are not fattening and are one of the best foods you can eat on your diet.
You were taught that you should always follow the rules. The trouble is that sometimes the rules are wrong. You need to break these eight rules if you want to succeed on your weight loss journey and rid yourself of those extra pounds. Some rules were just made to be broken.
